19-Jul-2015 Last Rites

  • 1 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz passion fruit syrup
  • 1/2 oz falernum
  • 6 oz aged Martinique rum (I substituted Appleton Estate VX)

Add all ingredients to a blender along with 12 oz crushed ice. Blend at high speed for 5 seconds. Serve in a large snifter.

Anything made with passion fruit syrup is immediately four stars. This drink is equal parts simple, tasty, and strong. I'd going to try variations of this with other rums like black strap molasses, Jamaican dark, and Puerto Rican or Barbados gold rum. Real nice. This is a "must-try". You won't be disappointed.

31-May-2015 Beachcomber's Punch

  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz white grapfruit juice
  • 1 oz Apricot brandy
  • 1 ioz simple syrup
  • 3 oz Demerara rum
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1/4 teaspoon Pernod (I substituted Pastis)

Add all ingredients to a blender along with 12 oz crushed ice. Blend at high speed for 5 seconds. Serve in a champagne flute or tulip glass.

This is a nice one, but I tend to like anything with Pernod/Pastis in it. It's only a tiny amount but packs a lot of anise flavor. The grapefruit/lime/apricot is a nice fruit blend, too. HIGHLY recommend this one.

24-May-2015 Planet of the Apes

  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz pineapple juice
  • 2 oz orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz Creme de Banana
  • 2 oz Dark Jamaican rum
  • 1 oz amber 151-proof rum (Bacardi)

Shake all ingredients with ice. Pour into a tall glass. Garnish with a slice of fresh banana and a purple orchid (I had neither).

You'd think this would be overly sweet, but it's not; it has just enough sweetness and a good bit of power. My brother-in-law loves this drink. I give it 4 of 5 stars. The 151 can sneak up on you!

05-Apr-2015 Ginger Beer Man

  • 1 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 1/2 oz Jamaican rum
  • 1 1/2 oz Galliano
  • ginger beer

Shake all ingredients except ginger beer with ice. Strain in to a tiki mug or rum barrel filled with ice. Top with ginger beer.

I used diet ginger beer as I just can't drink regular sodas anymore. This cuts down the sweetness somewhat.
